Online Safety: Don’t Fall for Scammers

The internet is a powerful tool for connection, but it can also be a place where scammers and impostors take advantage of trusting people, especially older adults.

Recently, I experienced this firsthand when fake accounts started using my photos and identity, reaching out to my followers and asking for money. It was shocking and frustrating to see my images and name being misused and even more concerning to know that vulnerable people could be targeted.
I took immediate action by reporting all the fake pages and accounts to platform support. Three of the four posers have already been taken down, but one account is still active and being addressed by the support team. While the situation is stressful, it has reminded me how important it is to stay alert and protect ourselves online.
Here are a few simple tips to stay safe:
Never send money or personal information to someone online without verifying their identity.
Pause before responding to urgent or secretive messages.
Take screenshots and report suspicious accounts.
Real friends or public figures will never pressure you for money or sensitive information. Families and caregivers should also talk to elderly loved ones about these risks and encourage them to ask for help if something feels off.

Internet safety is a habit, not a one‑time checklist. By following these rules and staying alert, you’ll protect your data, your devices, and your peace of mind. With the right practices in place, you can enjoy everything the internet offers — and avoid the pitfalls.
Please note that these are the only two official accounts that I own. Do NOT send money to scammers that poses as my account. https://www.facebook.com/ana.rivera.184
